The original green boards have a blind stamped decoration to the front board and to the back board, and gilt lettering to the spine. The boards are in Good condition with the gilt lettering and blind stamped decoration still very clear, but with fading, corner knocks, knocks to the top and bottom of the spine; and cracks to the top and bottom hinges (this is only cosmetic since the binding is structurally sound). The binding to this 153 year old book is exceptional and has stood the test of time.
There are 261 numbered pages with original yellow endpapers, 8 pages for the publisher’s List of Books bound-in between the front pastedown and the front free endpaper; and the Title Page that bears the date to the bottom of the page and to the top the title Idylls of the King by Alfred Tennyson, D.C.L., Poet Laureate’. The pages are in overall Very Good condition being very clean and tightly bound-in to the book with light writing in pencil to the front pastedown; signature in light pencil to the top of the Title Page, and very light and only very occasional spotting to the pages.
PLEASE NOTE: This is the first edition first issue of The Idylls of the King with the List of Books to the front of the book dated July 1859 and the reverse of the Title Page being blank.
