The First Edition has the scarce and collectable Charles Dickens Our Mutual Friend first edition in book form published by Chapman and Hall 193 Piccadilly London in 1865.  This Charles Dickens classic book is two volumes in one book and has 40 stunning full page black and white illustrations by Marcus Stone throughout the book.

This stunning example of the first edition in book form of Charles Dickens Our Mutual Friend is housed in an old half calf over marbled boards binding.

These circa 19th century boards have a five compartment spine and are in Good condition being worn and with scratches and general wear.

The first volume of Charles Dickens Our Mutual Friend has 320 numbered pages, and the second volume has 306 numbered pages, with each volume having 20 full page illustrated plates by Marcus Stone.

Charles Dickens has separated his novel Our Mutual Friend into four books, two of which are in Volume 1 and two in Volume 2.  In Volume 1 the books are Book the First The Cup and the Lip and Book the Second Birds of a Feather; in Volume 2 the books are Book the Third A Long Lane and Book the Fourth A Turning.
The issue points for Volume 1 are as follows:

 On page 20 line 20 missing the open quotation marks which are closed on page 20 line 29;
 On page 42 at the last line the comma portion of the semicolon is missing after the word “Fashion”;
 On page 44 line 32 there are closed quotation marks, but no open quotation marks at the start of the quotation which may have needed to be inserted in line 29;
 On page 142 15 lines up from the bottom of the page there are end quotes incorrectly inserted after the word “shame”;
 On page 154 on the last line of the page there is no full stop (or period) after the word “her”;
 On page 170 line 13 there are single and double quotation marks incorrectly inserted after the word “me”;
 On page 195 the full stop (or period) after the “Our Mutual Friend” headline at the very top of the page is missing;
 On page 196 line 17 the closed quotation marks after “Fledgeby” is missing;
 On page 202 line 24 there is only a single quotation mark placed before the word “you” instead of a double quotation mark, with the line ending in a double quotation mark;
 On page 215 the hyphen in the word “immense” is not printed where the word is spread over two sentences;
 On page 217 line 17 there should be single and not double quotation marks before the word “No” and single not double quotation marks after the word “can’t”;
 On page 253 there is no hyphen in the word “accompanied” which runs onto two lines and should thus read “accom-panied”;
 On page 270 line 14 there is only a single quotation mark after the word “it” and not a double quotation mark as required;
 On page 276 line 4 there is no apostrophe in the word “don’t”;
 On page 306 line 27 there is only a single quotation mark after the name “Charley” and not a double quotation mark as required;
 On page 314 line 20 there is a single quotation mark missing before the word “Even”.


The issue points for Volume 2 are as follows:

 The List of Plates on page viii entry 7 lacks the quotation marks where they are present in the illustration opposite page 91;
 The List of Plates on page viii entry 10 lacks the quotation marks before and after the word “Righted” where they are present in the illustration opposite page 130;
 The List of Plates on page viii entry 12 incorrectly quotes the illustration opposite page 169 which should read “In the Lock-keeper’s House” as per the illustration;
 The List of Plates on page viii entry 19 is incorrectly spelt reading “Mrs. Boffin Does the Honors of the Nursery Door” and should read as per the illustration opposite page 274: “Mr. Boffin Does the Honours of the Nursery Door”
 On page 50 line 19 there are double and single quotation marks before the word “Many”;
 On page 58 line 7 there is just a single quotation mark after the word “sir”” and there should be a double quotation mark;
 On page 66 line 21 there is no dot over the letter “i” in the word “its”;
 On page 68 line 5 there are no quotation marks in the passage “Was it gone?”;
 On page 85 17 lines up from the bottom of the page the quotation marks in the paragraph are missing;
 On page 108 line 18 the hyphen in the word “property” which runs over two lines is missing;
 On page 108 2 lines up from the bottom of the page there is no dot over the letter “i” in the word “him”;
 On page 115 14 lines up from the bottom of the page the word “principal” has been misspelt “pricipal”;
 On page 132 line 19 the hyphen in the word “Secretary” which runs over two lines is missing;
 On page 141 15 lines up from the bottom of the page there is a space in the word “loaf” between the letter “l” and the letter “o”;
 On page 141 3 lines up from the bottom of the page there is just a single quotation mark before the word “You” instead of a double quotation mark;
 On page 141 3 lines up from the bottom of the page there is no quotation mark before the word “Yes”;
 On page 158 23 lines up from the bottom of the page there are end quotes after the word “smash” with no quotation marks to the beginning of the sentence/quotation;
 On page 162 line 8 the hyphen in the word “transported” which runs over two lines is missing;
 On page 175 14 lines up from the bottom of the page the hyphen in the word “somebody” which runs over two lines is missing;
 On page 179 line 1 there is no dot over the letter “i” in the word “in”;
 On page 249 2 lines up from the bottom of the page the hyphen in the word “affectionate” which runs over two lines is missing;
 On page 272 line 27 lacking a single quotation after the word “thinking”;
 On page 277 line 12 the hyphen in the word “contemplating” which runs over two lines is missing;
 On page 277 line 23 the hyphen in the word “married” which runs over two lines is missing; and
 On page 305 16 lines up from the bottom of the page there is no full stop (or period) after the word “pound”.


The pages do have foxing but where present these are generally quite light, making this an even more attractive and desirable first edition first issue of Charles Dickens book Our Mutual Friend.
