The First Edition has this wonderful first edition book for sale, Mark Twain’s Library of Humour.  This scarce old Mark Twain first edition book was published in 1888 by Chatto and Windus.

The original publisher’s red boards features two humorous E.W. Kemble illustrations embossed in black to the front board, and an additional illustration embossed to the spine.  The title to the front board and spine are in gilt.  The back board bears the Chatto and Windus motif.

The boards are in Very Good condition being remarkably clean and attractive, with the gilt to the front board being particularly bright.  The front board has a very small stain to the bottom right corner; the spine is faded; knocks to the top and bottom of the spine; there is minor edge wear; and there are scratch marks to the cloth of the back board.  Despite the imperfections this is an extremely attractive set of boards for this old Mark Twain first edition book.

There are 717 numbered pages with a 32-page Chatto and Windus catalogue to the end of the book dated April 1888.  The original front and rear endpapers are green floral in design; the Half Title is present; the advertisement to the front of the book for Mark Twain’s Works uniform illustrated edition is present; the Frontispiece and Title Page is separated by a tissue guard; there is the printer’s imprint for Spottiswoode and Co to the reverse of the Title Page; the Contents Page is six pages in length; and the List of Illustrations is four pages in length.  The first short story in Mark Twain’s Library of Humour is The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain, which was one of Mark Twain’s first published stories, which was first published in 1867.

The pages are in Very Good condition being mostly clean but with light small spotting throughout to the pages (occasional) and edges of the book.

This is a wonderful example of this old Mark Twain book that will make an important addition to any old Mark Twain book collection, old children’s illustrated book collectors, or any collection of old fiction books.

Please see the thumbnail images below to view the Front Board and Spine, the Front Board, the Spine, the Back Board, the Front Endpapers, the Rear Endpapers, the Half Title Page, the Title Page, the Contents Pages, the List of Illustrations Pages, and a large number of the pages and the EW Kemble illustrations inside this very rare and collectable Mark Twain first edition book.
